Re: Welcome!
Hey, Jim
Looking forward to spending some time on this board. Good luck with it, and I hope it grows big time. I'll give you a hint as to who I am, if you have not figured it out yet. It's 92 degrees and climbing where I live. It's a dry heat...

Re: Welcome!
Hi Jim!
Cool to see another web bbs in town! I am surprised you didn't write your own, but hey, phpBBS is well known so not a bad choice, other than as a .NET Developer I don't have much love for PHP.
Shameless self-promotion for mine (Runs in my basement in Little Italy Omaha): https://MessageBase.net/ and this one has "door games" at https://MessageBase.net/GameZone/

Oh, one thing I just noticed trying to reconnect: https://jims-bbs.com/ just says "Coming Really Soon". Looks like I have to go to https://jims-bbs.com/bbs/ to get back here.
Re: Welcome!
I'm afraid that I don't have the play-time to build a decent one from scratch (yet!) And, I'd like to self-host but I'm not quite ready to do that. I have been a sysadmin on a couple of phpBB boards so I'm familiar with the gotchas and all of that.BKimball wrote: Thu Jun 25, 2026 12:12 am Hi Jim!

Regarding PHP ... well, it's ubiquitous so it's really easy to find cheap hosting and to set one of these up.
I'll have to give your BBS a try.
Yeah, I want to fly under the radar of the search-engines for now while I try to build up a user-base of real people and not scammers.BKimball wrote: Thu Jun 25, 2026 12:14 am Oh, one thing I just noticed trying to reconnect: https://jims-bbs.com/ just says "Coming Really Soon". Re: Welcome!
Yeah, you get that if you stand up a static site with a "coming soon!" page, too. The latest ones I've seen are using weird combinations of characters to form meaningless words ... presumably to probe for secret folders.BKimball wrote: Fri Jun 26, 2026 8:50 pmGood point, I have to pluck autogenerated users from messagebase quite often.
